Chris on the Podium, Steve in the Points!

Chris Sherriffs fought his way through a crowded uphill sprint to secure a brilliant 3rd place in the 3/4 category event of the second CDNW road race of the year at Saighton on Sunday, while Steve Abbot shrugged off his injuries of Saturday and finished in the points in the E/1/2 race.

Despite a number of attacks, including plenty from teamwallis-CHH riders, the 3/4 category race pretty much stayed together and ended up with around 40 riders sprinting up the final hill. In one of his first road races, the junior Chris used his track skills to dodge through the melee to secure 10 points. Earlier on, John Sherriffs and Andy McCann had scored some of the prime points and in her first road race of the season junior rider Sarah Reynolds distinguished herself with her aggressive riding, always towards the front of the bunch, with all three finishing strongly in the sprint. Unfortunately, Ella and Louise were held up by a crash on the final corner, missing their chance to contest the sprint.

The E/1/2 race was billed to have a less intimidating start sheet than the first few events of the season as the major national teams were supposed to be contesting the Bikeline 2-day Premier Calendar event. However, that was cancelled on the Saturday, meaning that some of those riders arrived at Saighton instead and Rapha-Condor riders took 3 of the top 4 places. Nevertheless, Steve Abbot was active in the second chase group and sprinted to 15th place, in the points again. Tom finished just ahead of the group containing Lewis, Eldon and Iain.
